Sea
Captain's House
The Sea Captain’s House, in Greek ‘Kapetanospito’ was built by
a ship-owners family from Oia and dates back to 1864.
This is one of only eight homes directly on the Oia Caldera
that are officially designated by the Greek Ministry of
Culture as examples of traditional architecture and protected
for conservation.
The house is positioned at the top of the island’s cliff,
twelve steps down from the main path that runs through the
village of Oia. It views the amazing volcanoes of Santorini
with the surrounding Caldera cliffs.
Dark volcanic stone is used for decorative purposes in
conjunction with white marble aperture frames for the upper
storey; in contrast, with the simple painted plaster is used
for the veranda and the lower stories.
The upper facade gives the illusion of two floors , the lower
having a smooth, stone-like plaster finish and the upper level
faced with hand-cut red volcanic stones. Below, the lower
façade’s two arched doorways tower over the Courtyard. The
arches are outlined with red volcanic stones.
The interior layout incorporated the local Santorini elements,
of high, cross vaulted ceilings, walls built from black and
red volcanic stones and pumice cement, rooms carved into the
cliff’s rocks and the traditional window over the outer and
inner doorways.
The house is furnished with pieces crafted on the island, as
well as furniture brought from abroad.
A peaceful house, with its grand exterior of two terraces,
each positioned as the ship’s bow facing directly into the
sea. A courtyard framed by simple, white walls, filled with
midnight stars and the afternoon sun.
The House and all three Suites face directly to the Santorini
caldera - volcano – sea.
The Venetian and Sailing Sea suites are on the shared main
Terrace level. Each suite has one queen size bed, Jacuzzi
bath, and shower with caldera, volcano & sea views. The
Sailing is slightly larger with a two window view - while the
Venetian has one window to the view.
The Captain's suite is the largest suite in the House - on the
Courtyard level with private entrance, one king size bed, one
single bed and an upper sleeping room with two single beds or
one queen size bed, Jacuzzi bath plus separate shower,
mini-bar and caldera, volcano & sea views.
