Oia
The
traditional settlement of Oia is located in the northwestern
part of the island. It belongs to the monuments of
archaeological heritage. During the 19th century Oia was the
village of ship owners and seamen. What remained of the wealth
and the rigorous life are the 'sea captain's houses' which
were inhabited by sea captains and ship owners. They are
mostly caves, facing the caldera with the volcano and the
other islands. Modern comforts have been added to satisfy
guests' needs whilst preserving the original structure of the
caves.
Oia is one of the most picturesque villages of Santorini with
houses set in an amphitheatrical position. The curves of the
houses seem to create games in daylight and the gorgeous
colors of sunsets offer a unique landscape.
In the utmost of the settlement is the Venetian castle. In the
north and eastern part is the plain of Oia with its famous
